PhD scholarship in Philosophy in Biology

An Elphinstone PhD Scholarship is offered for a project in the philosophy of biology at the University of Aberdeen (UK).
Particularly welcome are projects on
(1) methodological issues such as explanation, experimentation, and scientific discovery,
 (2) metaphysical topics such as causation and mechanisms,
and (3) the use of semantic concepts in the life sciences. Biological subdisciplines of particular interest include molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, neuroscience, and the behavioural sciences.

Philosophical research projects with a significant historical, sociological, empirical, or mathematical component are encouraged. However, the scholarship is not intended for purely empirical research or projects in bioethics. The PhD will be supervised within Philosophy and the Centre for History and Philosophy of Science, Technology, and Medicine.

An Elphinstone Scholarship covers the entirety of tuition fees for a PhD student of any nationality commencing full-time study in October 2014, for the three-year duration of their studies.

Application deadline: Friday 6 June 2014. Details about the application process can be found at: http://www.abdn.ac.uk/cass/graduate/elphinstone-phd-scholarships-329.php
